Longing to wear your favourite diamond studs or jhumka earrings but you realised that your ear piercing wasn’t the same as before, the stud might fall off or the jhumka isn’t looking as aesthetic as it should be? Obviously, you are disappointed!!
Don’t fret because you aren’t alone. Thousands of people, (both women and men) suffer from enlargement of their ear piercing due to weight of earrings over the years or laxity of the tissues with age. Sometimes there is trauma or injury leading to a partial or complete tear in the ear lobe.
Is it possible to stick it together? Will you use glue?? – These are the common questions my patients usually ask me. The answer is NO. if you observe, the lining of the piercing gets covered by skin soon after piercing, which is what allows you to wear your earrings without any discomfort and ensures the hole doesn’t close back. Sticking skin to skin by glue is a temporary gimmick commonly used by people to give a quick remedy but not a lasting or scientifically correct one.
The correct method is surgery. It’s a small procedure done under local anaesthesia in which the skin within the piercing hole is scraped off and the raw edges are held together by fine, delicate stitches. As it heals, it closes the opening completely with minimal scarring. Occasionally a tiny flap of skin of may be required to maintain the contour of your ear pinna. On rare occasions, a small piece of cartilage from your ear itself will be needed to support a very lax ear lobe.
We will be able to guide you better about which method will suit you the best once we evaluate you.
The stitches usually come out in 7-10 days. The important part to remember after surgery is that scars are weak tissue. Hence the subsequent piercing should not be at the same site. It should be adjacent to the previous hole and done with a gun for more precision and accuracy.
