Contractures occur when the burn scar matures, thickens, and contracts. This can prevent movement and cause significant disability and disfigurement. It usually occurs when a burn occurs over a joint, but can be seen over the face also. A contracture is a serious complication of a burn.
Post-burn contractures are avoidable but if they occur, surgery remains the best solution. Timely intervention and aggressive physiotherapy can help restore normalcy.
