MOLE

What is a mole?

Known by many names like nevi, til or birth mark, moles are the most common pigmented skin lesions and have a variable number and appearance. They are formed by clusters of normal pigment cells called melanocytes and appear brown or black (most commonly), but may also be blue, red or pink. They can be smooth, flat, wrinkled or raised. They may also have hair within them. Most people have 10 to 45 moles over the body which appear during childhood and teenage years.

Can moles change appearance?

Yes. Moles do change appearance over the years. They may fade or disappear. Though mostly harmless, certain changes occurring in them should send alarm signals and warrant a close inspection by a doctor.

What are the unusual changes to look for?

They are described by an easy to remember ABCDE guide.

  • A. Asymmetry: Like the name indicates – one half is not like the other half
  • B. Borders: Irregular, notched or scalloped borders
  • C. Colour: Change of colour, many colours, or uneven colours
  • D. Diameter: A new mole appearing, larger than 6mm in size
  • E. Evolving: Change in size, shape, colour or height of an existing mole. New symptoms like itchiness, crusting and bleeding are also of concern.

4. When to visit your doctor?

Regular moles are harmless and do not need removal, unless for cosmetic reasons. They could be removed by an energy device or surgery, which your doctor will discuss with you. If you notice any of the ABCDE changes, they may indicate a melanoma, and should be examined by your doctor at the earliest.

5. What precautions should you take to prevent cancerous changes in moles?

Avoid sun exposure between 11 am and 3 pm when the Sun is the strongest. If stepping out in the Sun, to cover the skin and wear hat and sunglasses. Apply sunscreen with high SPF (above 30) every 3 to 4 hours while exposed to the Sun.

SKIN TAGS

What is a skin tag and where are they found?

They are small harmless growths that form primarily in areas where the skin forms creases (or rubs together), such as the neck, armpit, and groin. They may also occur on the face, usually on the eyelids. The surface may be smooth or irregular in appearance and is often raised from the surface of the skin on a fleshy stalk called a peduncle. They are also seen in association with jewellery like gold chains.

Do they need removal?

They are completely harmless and removal is usually for cosmetic reasons. Your doctor can use various methods like cauterization, cryo, excision, laser, or surgical ligation to remove them. They are office procedures and painless. Household remedies are not recommended due to chances of infection and unpleasant scarring.
