What is a Tummy Tuck?
- This is an operation done to improve the contour or shape of the tummy, waist and hips.
- It involves 2 steps, the first being liposuction, in which fat cells are sucked out from under the skin and the second step involves re-draping and removal of excess skin after suitably tightening the abdominal muscles (if required).
- The belly button may be repositioned during this operation.
Who is an ideal candidate for this surgery?
Any person who desires improvement in the shape of the torso (abdomen, waist and hips) for whatever reason is a good candidate to undergo this procedure. Typically:
- Women who have had one or more pregnancies, whose family is complete and who desire removal of stretch marks and a pre-pregnancy like flat tummy.
- Morbidly obese persons (men and women) with excessive skin hanging from the abdomen (panniculus) that obstructs daily activities and leads to sweat accumulation, maceration, irritation and rashes.
- Young women who have not had children but want to remove excessive abdominal fat/skin bulge.
- Men who desire a better abdominal contour.
- Persons diagnosed with abdominal/umbilical/incisional hernias will also benefit from this procedure as it can be performed along with the repair of the hernia.
Will the scar be visible?
Using globally established, popular methods of incision placement and with our experience, you will be left with a fine linear scar which can be easily hidden below your undergarments.
How long is this surgery?
- Depending upon your requirements, the surgery can take between 3-6 hours during which you will be under general anaesthesia.
- Further details and options can be discussed with us during consultations prior to surgery.
- A soft tube may be placed at the operative site to drain excess fluid post-operatively and will be removed by the surgeon when the draining fluid is minimal.
How many days will I have to be admitted?
Our patients are usually walking around by the evening of the surgery, if they feel comfortable. We recommend staying for at least 2-3 days following surgery.
What are the complications?
With proper planning and our strict adherence to patient safety, complications will be rare. However, postsurgical collection of blood/fluid under the skin, some fluid discharge from the wound, gaping of the wound and infection are some of the known complications of this surgery. Details will be discussed during the consultations.
Will I loose shape after this surgery?
Yes. If you are not careful and do not practice a regular diet and exercise protocol, weight gain will mask the benefits of surgery.
Will there be any scars?
- Yes, all surgeries result in scars.
- With good suturing technique and attention to detail, scars usually are not overtly visible.
- Over a period of time, the scars soften and merge with the surrounding skin. However they are visible as thin white lines.
